Our Story

Some 70 years ago, a story was started that is still going on today, when Claude Merriman Sr. decided that the business he would pursue was the service of burying the deceased. He wanted to make sure that this service would be different from the rest.

Merriman Funeral Home has had the distinction of being the leading funeral home since its establishment in 1951, orchestrating the majority of State Funerals from Sir David Rose all the way through to the Presidents who have died in and out of office. But more importantly the Merriman Funeral Home has become the mainstay of families who want only the very best for their loved ones who have passed. This was the vision of this man whose legacy has been passed to the next generation.

His commitment to improving the lives of those around him led to a career in public service and in 1957 – 58 and again in 1962 – 63 he served as Mayor of the City of Georgetown. He later served as Minister of Labour from 1964 – 1968. A bust to his memory now stands as testimony to his remarkable achievements as mayor at the eastern end of the stretch of land that bears his name – the Merriman’s Mall.

Today, the company is run by a Board of Directors comprising the offspring and grandchildren of this distinguished Guyanese. Merriman continues with the same commitment to excellence with which it was established. Honoring your loved ones as they take their final rites is our commitment and we will do so with compassion and respect. Our team have both the training and experience to provide a seamless experience from the first call to interment.

Merriman has entered the modern arena with a major refurbishment that will provide the quality of care that is expected from an establishment of this standing, but alongside this the company understands that everyone would like to have access to this level of service and has designed a number of packages to meet your budget.
